Introduction

## The hills of wine, white truffles and hazelnuts

The Langhe are a landscape of vineyard-covered hills in southern Piedmont, between the Po River and the Ligurian Apennines, where wine, white truffles and hazelnuts tell the story of an entire territory. They are part of the UNESCO site “Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato”, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014.

The serial site has six components – the Langa del Barolo, the Barbaresco hills, Nizza Monferrato and Barbera, Canelli and Asti Spumante, the Monferrato of the Infernot and the Castle of Grinzane Cavour – spread across the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo. Culture and nature

## A landscape shaped by the vine

The Tanaro River divides the Langhe into two zones: the high Langa, reaching about 900 metres, and the low Langa, generally below 600 metres. The geography changes from one hill to the next, and it shows in the flavour of local products.

The Piedmont Region recalls the official rationale for the inscription: “an outstanding living testimony to the historical tradition of winegrowing” (in its Italian wording, «una eccezionale testimonianza vivente della tradizione storica della coltivazione della vite»). For UNESCO the vineyards are also an example of human interaction with the natural environment, with grape varieties matched to specific soil and climate conditions. Uniqueness

## Why the Langhe are unique

### 🏛️ UNESCO World Heritage since 2014

The World Heritage Committee inscribed the site on 22 June 2014, during its 38th session in Doha (Qatar). It is Italy’s 50th site on the List.

### 🍇 A still-living testimony

Under criterion (iii), the vineyards are an outstanding testimony to winegrowing traditions refined over a long history and still in use today.

### 🌿 People and environment

Under criterion (v), the landscape is an example of human interaction with the natural environment: grape varieties are matched to specific soils and climate, making it an international benchmark.

Art and architecture

## Contemporary art and historic architecture

The Barolo Chapel, in the Brunate vineyard in La Morra, is a 1999 work by Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett. It was a small, never-consecrated church, bought together with the vineyard in 1970 and used as a farm-equipment store. According to the producer’s page, the chapel is temporarily closed for works, with reopening planned for autumn 2026: check its current status before planning a visit.

Among the historic buildings, in Barolo the Falletti Castle houses the WiMu and the Regional Enoteca; in Neive you will find the Clock Tower (13th century), the 18th-century palazzo of the Counts of Castelborgo, Casa Cotto (13th century), the Baroque Archconfraternity of San Michele and the 16th-century chapels of San Rocco and San Sebastiano. In Barbaresco the restored 19th-century church of San Donato is now home to the Regional Enoteca.
