Introduction

## Chianti, a slow journey between hills and wine glasses

Between Florence and Siena, Chianti is a succession of hills, vineyards, woods and stone villages. It is a land that asks for time: you cross it slowly, stopping in village squares and in the wineries, where wine tells the story of the place. For travellers seeking an authentic experience, every bend in the road opens onto a different view.

The name Chianti originally referred only to the territories of the Chianti League, namely Gaiole, Radda and Castellina. Today the area also includes parts of the municipalities of Greve in Chianti, San Casciano, Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi. History and the Black Rooster

## From the Chianti League to the Black Rooster

The Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) is the symbol of Chianti. Historical records tie it to the territory as early as the 14th century, as the emblem of the Chianti League, a political and military alliance set up by Florence to control the territory more closely, which united Castellina, Radda and Gaiole. The symbol is also linked to a medieval legend about the rivalry between Florence and Siena over the possession of the area.

The roots of Chianti Classico as a wine territory go back to 1716, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III, set the boundaries of the production area for the first time.

[Source: Ricasoli](https://ricasoli.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/gusto-sano.pdf)

On 14 May 1924 a group of producers founded the Consortium for the Defence of Typical Chianti Wine and its Mark of Origin, Italy’s first wine protection consortium, choosing the Black Rooster as its emblem. In 1984 Chianti Classico was awarded DOCG status, the highest recognition for Italian quality wines.

The history of Chianti can be read in its fortified villages. In Castellina the fortress, dominated by the tower the Florentines built in the 15th century to defend against the Republic of Siena, houses the Chianti Archaeological Museum. Among the stops suggested for a trip through the area are also Meleto Castle and Brolio Castle.

In Radda you can follow the traces of the old walls and visit the Palazzo del Podestà and the medieval church of San Niccolò. The village of Volpaia, with its castle, is tied to the history of the Chianti League.
